Driving in Albania: a guide for visitors

Basic rules, roads, fuel, parking and practical tips for driving a rental car safely in Albania.

Albania offers stunning scenery, from the Ionian coast to the Albanian Alps, and a car is the best way to explore it. This guide summarises what you should know before you set off.

Basic rules

  • Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road
  • Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers
  • Using a phone while driving without a hands-free system is prohibited
  • Always respect the posted speed limits
  • Alcohol tolerance is very low: do not drink and drive

Roads

Main routes, such as Tirana–Durrës and the Nation's Road towards Kosovo, are in good condition. In mountain areas roads are narrower and winding, so allow extra time and drive carefully, especially at night.

Fuel and payments

Fuel stations are plentiful along the main roads. In remote areas they are less frequent, so fill up before heading into the mountains. Always carry some cash for small payments.

Parking in cities

In Tirana and coastal towns, parking in the centre can be difficult at peak times. Use marked car parks and do not leave the car in restricted areas.

Travelling outside Albania

If you plan to visit Kosovo, Montenegro or North Macedonia, let us know in advance. A Green Card is required for travel outside the country.
